General

What is Pedalglobe?

An app for planning multi-day bike trips: route and stages, days and pace, climate along the way and information on countries and entry rules. You can add trains, buses, ferries and flights as connections.

How much does it cost?

Downloading and using the app is free. Free gives you every feature with one trip and unlimited routes up to 1,500 km. The example trip Dresden – Tbilisi does not count. Visa and entry information is always free, and so are the 3D flight up to 1,500 km and a flight video of up to 60 seconds in 720p with watermark.

Pedalglobe Pro is a one-time purchase with your Apple Account, not a subscription. It lets you plan as many trips as you like and routes of any length, gives you the roadbook as a PDF and GPX per day stage, lets you fly over any route and share the flight video in full length without a watermark. Pro costs €24.99 in Germany. The App Store shows the price in your country. See Free and Pro for an overview.

Do I need an account?

No. Your data stays on your device and, unless you turn sync off, in your private iCloud.

Which devices does Pedalglobe run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 26.1 or later. Pedalglobe is currently not available for the Mac.

Does Pedalglobe give turn-by-turn directions?

Not yet. Live navigation is planned for a later version. On the road, the travel mode “Today” shows the stage of the day. You can take your routes to other apps and devices as GPX.

Which languages?

German and English, following your device's language.

Without internet

What works offline?
  • your saved routes and trips, planning and editing
  • place search (cities and towns worldwide, plus countries, regions, mountains and rivers)
  • climate values and the climate map
  • country and entry information
  • bike routing and the cycle network in regions you downloaded before
  • export as GPX
  • a coarse world map built into the app

The app loads the detailed map online. Areas you viewed recently stay on the device for a while.

Why is the map blurry or without details?

Without a connection, the app only shows the built-in world overview. Check that your device is online and that Pedalglobe may use mobile data in iOS Settings. You still see the climate layer and your routes offline.

How does bike routing work?

Pedalglobe calculates bike routes on your device, worldwide and without a server. To do so, the app downloads the routing data of a region once, for example with Download region. The files come from tiles.posan.de, our storage at Cloudflare. After that, routing works there without a connection too. Outside downloaded regions, the app estimates the path and marks it with “≈”. Your bike profile (for example touring or road bike) affects paths, surfaces, climbs and daily stages.

Can I download the detailed map for the road?

No. Pedalglobe does not offer detailed maps for download. Offline, the app shows the built-in world overview and, in downloaded regions, the cycle network. The app loads the other map types and the relief online only, because the rules of these services don't allow prefetching.

iCloud and your data

How do my routes get to my iPad?

Through your iCloud. Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on all devices. Pedalglobe then syncs routes, trips and settings automatically, as long as Sync with iCloud is on under More › iCloud Sync.

What is not synced?

The current planning draft (it stays on the device, save it as a route to continue on another device), recent searches and downloaded routing regions.

I see a route twice, marked “(Conflict …)”.

You changed the same route on two devices before they could sync. Pedalglobe keeps both versions. Look at both and delete the one you don't need.

I deleted something. Can I get it back?

Yes, for 30 days under More › iCloud Sync › Recently Deleted.

My iCloud storage is full.

Your data stays on the device. Pedalglobe shows this and syncs once there is space again.

How do I back up without iCloud or move to a new device?

Under More › iCloud Sync, Export All Data… creates a backup file (.pedalglobe-backup) with all routes and trips. Save it, for example in the Files app, and read it on the new device with Import Data…. With iCloud you don't need a file: sign in with the same Apple Account on the new device and install Pedalglobe.

How do I turn off iCloud or delete my data there?

Under More › iCloud Sync. Delete Data in iCloud… removes everything from Pedalglobe in your iCloud. Everything stays on your device. Deleting only the app keeps the data in iCloud.

Can Apple or Posan read my routes?

We can't, because the data is only in your private iCloud. The app also puts the content of your routes and trips into encrypted fields. Details are in the privacy policy.

Countries, visas and safety

Where does the country and entry information come from?

We summarise it in our own words from official sources (for example the German Federal Foreign Office and the travel advice of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands), drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by us. Every item shows its source and date. General facts (language, currency, plugs, emergency numbers, time zone) come from Wikidata and the time zone database.

No guarantee – only the authorities of the destination country are binding. Entry rules change often and at short notice. Before your trip and before each border, check the official pages linked in the app and read the original text there.

How up to date is it?

Each country card shows when we last checked the information and warns if that was a while ago. New data comes with app updates.

I found a mistake.

Please write to kontakt@posan.de with the country, your passport and the source that says otherwise. We'll check it and fix it in the next data release.

Are the routes safe and rideable?

Routes are based on OpenStreetMap and calculated automatically. We can't guarantee that a path is rideable, permitted or safe. The app doesn't know about roadworks, closures or road conditions. Follow signs and traffic rules on the road and plan with a margin.

What do the climate values mean?

Long-term averages for every day of the year, derived from monthly values (temperature, precipitation and rain days 1995–2024, cloud cover and wind 1981–2010). They tell you what to expect typically. They are not a weather forecast.

Maps and data sources

Where do the map, places and climate data come from?

Map and bike routing are based on OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL). OpenFreeMap serves the map in the OpenMapTiles schema. Other map types come from OpenTopoMap, the OpenStreetMap Foundation and the BKG, satellite imagery from ESA WorldCover Sentinel-2 data (for now from EOX), the relief from Mapterhorn and the 3D view from Apple Maps. Elevation comes from the Copernicus DEM, places from GeoNames and Natural Earth, climate from CHELSA and CRU TS. All sources with their licences are listed under Data sources & licences and in the app under More › Data Sources and Licences.

A path is missing on the map or something is wrong.

The map data comes from OpenStreetMap, which anyone can improve: openstreetmap.org/fixthemap. Changes appear in Pedalglobe with later map releases.

May I publish exported routes?

Yes. Routed tracks contain data from OpenStreetMap. If you publish them, please credit “© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL”.

Pedalglobe Pro

How do I restore my purchase (new device, reinstall)?
  1. Open Pedalglobe and go to More.
  2. Under Pedalglobe Pro, tap Restore Purchases.
  3. If asked, sign in with the Apple Account you used to buy it.

If that doesn't work:

  • Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you used for the purchase.
  • Make sure in-app purchases are allowed on the device (Screen Time, restrictions).
  • Restart the device.
  • Write to kontakt@posan.de. We can't see the purchase itself. Please don't send us payment details.
Does Pro work on all my devices and for my family?

Yes, on all devices with the same Apple Account. With Family Sharing, also for the members of your family group.

What happens to my trips without Pro?

Routes and trips you already have are never locked, also when they are longer than 1,500 km. They stay visible, editable and exportable as GPX. Without Pro, you just can't create another trip or save a new route over 1,500 km.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are decided by Apple, not by us. You request one at reportaproblem.apple.com: sign in, choose “Request a refund”, give the reason and select Pedalglobe Pro.

Location and privacy

Why does the app ask for my location?

To show you on the map and to plan from your location with Route here. Permission is optional. Without it, you find places with the search. The app sends the coordinate to no one. It does load the map tiles around your location online, though, and the map area reveals your approximate area.

What data does Pedalglobe collect?

None. The app sends us no data. There are no ads, no analytics of our own and no account. If you allowed sharing with app developers in iOS, Apple passes crash reports on to us. When loading maps and routing regions, the services see your IP address and the area. Details are in the privacy policy.

Reporting a problem

Did the app crash or behave oddly? Write to kontakt@posan.de: what you did, what happened, app version, device, iOS version. A screenshot helps. If you turned on Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements › Share With App Developers in iOS, Apple sends us crash reports without details about you.
